Developing into Circles

During this project I came to a point where I felt like I was stuck, I had hit a mental art block.
To start this project I decided that I was going to paint, therefore I joined the painting project group, and for a while this was going well and I was really happy with the work that I was creating. However as I got to the half way point of the year I think I just got sick of painting and couldn't figure out a way of developing my paintings further as I wasn't really happy with anything I had tried or any of the ideas I had.
I then started experimenting with the collages, using found imagery and some sections from my paintings, but I still wasn't happy with these pieces. I liked them and I think that they worked well, however I just felt that their aesthetic wasn't really what I wanted for this project, and they didn't really fit in with my other work.
One thing that I did like about the collages was the circle idea, this also links back to some of the other experiments that I did at the start of the year in my sketchbook.
I started looking into art in science and found some really interesting cell and petri dish art and this is when I started to develop my work in a sort of abstract circular way.

Experimental Collage 2 (Circles)

I created some experimental collages using found images and parts of my own work, I have decided that I am not going to develop these pieces any further as they don't really fit in with the rest of the visuals for this project.
However before I decided this I did play around with creating these collages in a circular composition as I knew that I wanted circles to be a theme throughout this project.
These are the outcomes of this experimentation:

Experimental Collage 1

During this project I have struggled with how I wanted the visuals to look and develop, as I started this project only creating paintings, however I felt this was really limiting my visual outcomes and didn't really fit with my creative process.  I like to use a variety of medias and techniques during a project and create as many visual outcomes as possible.
So I decided that I would introduce some different techniques to this project, and to start this I experimented with some digital collages on Photoshop, using found images and some sections from the paintings I have created already during this project.

I feel that these experimental collages turned out well however I have decided that I want this project to look different visually and these outcomes don't really fit in with my other ideas for this project.
Saying that I don't think that I would have been able to come to this conclusion and developed other ideas without having had created these collages. This made me realise what I didn't want this project to look like and therefore made me realise what I wanted visually.

I am happy with how these collages turned out and as a sub-project they work really well however they don't really fit in with the other visuals in this project, as I decided to go in a different direction.

A2 Anatomy Self-Portrait - Watercolour 1

This is an A2 watercolour self-portrait based on the anatomy of the hands and arms.
I liked the idea that what was underneath the skin helps us to move our face and body and wanted to create a piece based on distortion and the movement of the muscles, fat and tissue under the skin.
In this self-portrait I did include the facial features, unlike my other paintings. However I did still include the white and green flowers for continuity and that fact that I like them.
I feel this piece worked really well and became an interesting and unusual piece, and the fact that it is A2 meant that I could include more detail than the A6 and A3 studies.

Experimental A3 Watercolour

With this piece I tried experimenting with a slightly different way of applying the watercolour paint. However I didn't really like the out come at all, as it really didn't work and became way too messy. It also kind of looks like she had a nasty accident and part of her head is missing and some of her face is falling off.
Part way through doing the pen outline I decided that it was a waste of time to continue as I wasn't going to include this in with the rest of my work and I wasn't going to create any more pieces in this style.
I fell that part of the reason I don't like this piece is that I feel that I rushed it a little as I really wanted to see what it would look like. However I think that even if I had taken a bit more time creating it I still wouldn't had been happy.

A3 Anatomy - Watercolours

These are some more of the A3 watercolour studies that I have created during this project, that are based on head and neck anatomy.
I really enjoyed painting these pieces and I think that they work well as a series of painting. I think this is because I have made the green and white dead flowers a feature in each of them and the fact that they are very similar in colour and composition.

Dissected Neck - Watercolour

This is another A3 watercolour piece, this painting is based on an image of a neck being dissected that I found on Pinterest. I really like how this image turned out and I think that the image looks really cool and unusual.
However in this photograph of the piece, the flowers look like they blend into the skin of the face, but in real life there is much more of a distinct colour difference between the two.
